A World In Disguise (poem)
by Xin Yu (Beatriz) Zhuang
She
thinks she’s not skinny enough,
So
she never dare to taste a puff.
She
thinks she’s not gorgeous enough,
Lots
of Make-up she has to wear.
She’s
afraid she’s not graceful in their eyes,
Walk
like a cat she tries.
She’s
afraid she’s not perfect in their eyes,
A
thousand times in front of a mirror,
She
tries to find her prettiest smile.
-
But
when she goes for a photo shot,
Strike
a pose-
They
say she needs photoshop.

This is the first poem I tried during my freshman year in college. What I want to emphasize is the invisible pressure female were given in the society. The magazine and social media distorts beauty into an image constrained by their bias, making the public believe there is only a single kind of beauty exists. Being influenced, people start to pursue the kind of artificial beauty.
